What does "one less" mean?
Counting one less means finding the number that comes right before another
number.
When we count one less, we're taking away just one thing from our group. It's like when you eat one
cookie from your plate - there's one less cookie left!
How to count one less
1️⃣ Start with a number (like 5)
2️⃣ Count back one number (5 → 4)
3️⃣ That's your answer! One less than 5 is 4
Let's practice together!
Example 1: Balloon Pop!
Click the balloon with the number that is one less than the number shown:

Example 2: Fruit Basket
There are 7 fruits in the basket. If we take one away, how many are left?

Parent Tips 🌟
- Use everyday objects: Practice with snacks, toys, or steps - "You had 6 grapes and ate one, now you have 5!"
- Make it physical: Have your child hop forward while counting up, then hop back while counting down to show the relationship.
- Sing counting songs: Songs like "Five Little Monkeys" naturally reinforce counting one less with each verse.
